The FWF-funded research project "Composing | Publishing | Performing Opera: The Making of Alban Berg's Wozzeck and Lulu" examines all the steps in the genesis of Alban Berg's two operas, in particular the interaction between the various protagonists. Five groups of participants are to be distinguished:

1. Pupils of Alban Berg and individuals close to him.
2. Publishing house staff and self-employed persons working for the publishing house.
3. Employees of opera houses and concert halls.
4. Musicians involved in performances.
5. People who worked on the stage production, stage design and scenography.

This includes the conception, composition, printing, performance, and, if necessary, the adaptation of the works. The project aims to document these fields of activity in detail by collecting, compiling and commenting on a wide variety of sources.
